WORM SELECTION GUIDE
Worms are without doubt the most versatile fishing bait available, all fish species love worms and anglers from all disciplines use worms. However with a number of different worm species available it may not be as simple grabbing any worm and putting it on the hook. We are regularly asked by our customers whats the difference between the worm species we sell and when to use them. In this guide we will look at the different species and explain their typical uses.
LOBWORMS
The biggest of our worm species they are ideal for targeting Salmon, Sea Trout and Specimen fish. Lobworms also known as blackheads, are probably our most popular Salmon worm and we supply them in large numbers to anglers on the west coast when Salmon are running. Their large size means they are very visible bait which Salmon like and they tend not to catch smaller nuisance fish.
"The best Lobs in the country very highly recommended and great people to deal with...... Satisfaction from a customer that fishes the River Drowes. Yours Richie"
Lobs are also used for targeting larger specimen Perch, Tench and Bream. Anglers on the Barrow have been using Lobworms to catch big perch for decades. Chopping up a few big Lobs and fishing a Lob tail or a whole worm over the top of it is a deadly method for large perch. We also sell a lot of Lobs to anglers targeting larger Tench and Bream. Its is well know that Tench and Bream love worms and traditionally Dendrobaenas or Redworm would be used to target them. However when after larger specimens Lobs can be more selective and help avoid nuisance or smaller fish.
DENDROBAENAS
The most popular fishing worm in the world know to anglers as "dendra". Game and coarse anglers will both use dendra, but tend to use different sizes. We sell large dendra to trout anglers nationwide and they account for thousands of fish caught every year. Fished under a simple bubble float, trout love them. On rivers the length and breath of the country float or ledger fished worm will catch plenty of trout.
Large dendra is also popular with coarse anglers and is extensively used for chopped worm fishing. The worm is chopped up and fed into the swim mostly in groundbait via balls or through a feeder. This creates a highly attractive aroma of worm juice and also some movement which fish find hard to resist. Large dendra will also be used as a hook bait when targeting larger fish. Hookbaits can be just worms or cocktails with other bait such as maggots, casters or sweetcorn. Hair rigging worms or using the kebab style is also popular with tench anglers.
Medium denrda is our biggest selling worm and is used all most exclusively by match anglers targeting mixed bags of coarse fish. The medium size is perfect for chopping and hookbait. Being slight smaller they are the prefect size for targeting large numbers of fish and not sitting it out for larger fish. Hookbaits could again be just worms or cocktails. When pole fishing and feeding caster its hard to beat the head of a worm it mimics caster. Due to its robust nature you often catch several fish without having to change the bait which is simply not possible with caster. The smaller particle size also helps to hold fish in the swim for longer as they search for the worm.

" Them worms were brilliant Peter cheers. Bream liked them to only bait i had today was them, ill chat ye during the week and get more off ye"
Small Dendra is popular for hookbait and winter canal fishing. Individual or small bunches of these worms can be excellent when the fishing is a bit harder or smaller fish are the quarry. They became popular in a lot of situations as a substitute for redworms which many anglers where finding hard to get.
REDWORM
Like everyone during lock down I watched countless hours of fishing videos and one thing that really struck me was how important top anglers think redworms are. When you hear the likes of Steve Ringer, Will Raison and Bob Nudd talking about redworms you know they are a very important part of the match anglers armory. So what makes these small worms the holy grail of fishing worms.Firstly there is no doubt that the availability of these worms has played apart in their popularity among the top anglers. As they where not readily available to a lot of anglers, anyone that is able to get them or knows how to get them has a distinct advantage. It is the size movement and scent that set these worms apart.
Traditionally seen as a small hook worm they are the perfect size for hooking and especially useful on harder days or in swims that are fading, often getting you a bite when everything else fails. However the scent and movement off theses worms when their chopped is where the really power lies. Unlike dendra which can be chopped at the start and used during the session reds are better chopped in small quantities and introduced in to the swim straight away. The reason for this is when chopped you get magnificent movement a kin to joker but is doesn't last long. Chopped redworm can be introduced neat or in groundbait. If introducing in groundbait the worms need to be chopped just before they are introduced as any salt in the groundbait will kill them very quick and you lose the famed movement.
The scent of these worms is far more potent than dendra and their fish drawing and fishing holding power is unequaled.Introducing redworm into a dead or dying swim more often than not is trans-formative and you start getting bites straight away and will only catch on redworms despite trying other baits. Large fish also seems to be drawn to redworm and they are often used to target a bonus fish or two during a match. Despite having a cult following as hookbait for skimmers and bream reds are equally as good for other species and roach in particular love them. A smaller red hooked like a bloodworm and fished over small balls of groundbait lace with chopped worms is a brilliant way to catch roach particularly on harder days. We sell two redworm products the mix redworm and the small redworm hook packs. The mixed worm contains a high percentage of larger mature worm with some smaller worm. Its the ideal pack for match angers as its perfect for chopping and also some smaller hook worm. The small hook packs are purely small worm ideal for use as hookers only.
